Artist's Statement

Many of the small bronzes deal with the abortion issue and reflect my beliefs. Some of my pregnant ladies are content. Some mutilate themselves as they attempt to expel the life within, which is often larger than they are. Others, with missing arms or legs or partial heads, are helpless in some way - perhaps helpless to choose life, to undo what has been done, to forgive themselves for the choice they made, or to care for the life they chose. Recent miniature work of hands holding heads represent various maternal attitudes and relationships.

The fountain is about child abuse. Seen in profile, the appearance is reminiscent of a cradle. The exterior is covered with etched images of children. Water flows into a bowl at the top, then into hands representing the Heavenly Father, and finally into a basin shaped like a baptismal shell. A pattern of feathers behind the hands represents various Biblical passages concerning protective wings. The birds perched on the cupped hands represent the Biblical passage and title of the work, "Are you not worth more than many sparrows?".
